Processional march to mark HIV Vaccine Awareness Day in Kangemi on 18th May 2018

Every year on 18th May, the world marks the HIV Vaccine Awareness Day (HVAD). It is a day set aside to raise awareness of the continuing efforts by scientists to develop a vaccine against HIV- the virus that causes AIDS. It is also a day to honour all those who, in one way or the other, have contributed towards this global effort. This year, KAVI-Institute of clinical research (KAVI-ICR) of the University of Nairobi commemorated the day in Nairobi at the Kangemi Health centre.

The day started with a procession from Kangemi health centre (where the KAVI-ICR Kangemi research clinic is located) and was led by staff and the Salvation Army band through Kangemi Central and Mountain View sub locations respectively and finally at the West-lands sub-county social hall. Invited guests and the general community members joined the staff in the procession. The function was officially opened by Dr Gaudensia Mutua, the KAVI-ICR KNH site manager. Entertainment from various groups and a real-life testimony from someone living with HIV were part of the day’s activities of which messages regarding HIV Vaccine research were highlighted. The Guest of honour was Dr Asmah Awadh (Sub-County Medical Officer of Health) who commended the efforts made by KAVI-ICR in the search for an HIV vaccine. The function was also graced by representatives from the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), Liverpool VCT, Kangemi health centre staff and various other stakeholders from the county government. The function ended at around 1 pm with closing remarks being made by Dr Lavinia Bwisa the KAVI-ICR Kangemi clinic site manager. Community members were offered HIV testing, as well as blood sugar and blood group testing. We thank all those who attended the function and made it a success as well as the media houses (K24, Kameme, Peoples daily and The STAR newspaper) that covered the activities.
