DR. MARIANNE W. MUREITHI,
Director, KAVI - Institute of Clinical Research
Welcome to the KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR), a premier centre for clinical research and training within the University of Nairobi’s Faculty of Health Sciences. For more than two decades, KAVI-ICR has been committed to advancing health solutions that improve lives in Kenya, Africa, and globally.
As the new Director, I am honoured to lead this exceptional institute at a transformative time in global health. We build on a strong legacy of eight HIV vaccine trials, multiple epidemiological and basic science studies, and partnerships that span across the globe, working with leaders such as IAVI, Gilead Sciences, WHO, CEPI, AstraZeneca and trusted local collaborators including the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC).
Our Mission
To deliver bold, solution-driven research that addresses Africa’s most pressing health challenges: HIV and other infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, non-communicable diseases, and the growing intersection of climate change and health.
Our Strategic Pillars
1. Bold Science with Local Impact
Innovating from within Africa; developing HIV cure strategies, pandemic preparedness solutions, and climate-sensitive health interventions grounded in One Health principles.
2. Building Capacity and Empowering Future Leaders
We are passionate about training the next generation of African scientists, with a focus on gender equity and mentorship to ensure women and young researchers thrive in leadership roles.
3. Strategic Partnerships and Translation to Impact
Through strong collaborations with global and local partners, we ensure research moves from the lab to communities, improving health outcomes and promoting equity.
Our Research Priorities
- Communicable Diseases: HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, zoonoses, and childhood illnesses.
- Non-Communicable Diseases: Cancers (including breast, cervical, prostate), cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.
- Clinical Trials: HIV vaccines, novel prevention strategies, and therapeutic innovations.
- Scientific Citizenship: Linking evidence to policy and implementation for real-world solutions.
Together with our partners, government agencies, international collaborators, and communities, we are shaping a future where African science leads bold, equitable health solutions.
Thank you for joining us on this transformative journey.
