Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — KAVI–Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR), University of Nairobi, strengthened its global engagement in HIV vaccine research through active participation at AIDS 2026, the 26th International AIDS Conference, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 26 to 31 July 2026 under the theme “Rethink. Rebuild. Rise.”

The Institute was represented by Prof. Marianne W. Mureithi, Director of KAVI-ICR, and Beatrice Kyalo, Research Fellow at KAVI-ICR. Beatrice attended through sponsorship as a mentee in the HIV Vaccine Research Network (HVRN) mentoring programme, a reflection of KAVI-ICR’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of HIV vaccine researchers.

Throughout the conference, Prof. Mureithi took part in scientific debates, expert discussions and strategic meetings with the HVRN Advisory Group, contributing to conversations on HIV vaccine development, clinical trials, immunology and future research priorities.

AIDS 2026 also offered valuable opportunities to deepen existing collaborations, forge new partnerships, and engage with scientists, policymakers, funders and community representatives working towards ending the HIV epidemic.
